WARI TEXTILE MOTIF ART

The Wari (Huari) Empire of ancient Peru (600–1000 CE) wove elaborate tunics covered in checkerboard and step-fret patterns with abstract deity figures, using vicuña wool and cotton in dozens of colors. These masterful textiles, some deliberately unraveled as offerings, are an inclusive Andean heritage art demonstrating the high prestige of weaving in the Andes and influencing later Inca cloth.
