TONGVA PETROGLYPH ART
Southern California’s Tongva (Gabrielino) people carved abstract and anthropomorphic petroglyphs into sandstone boulders and canyon walls—sunbursts, coyote spirits, and wavy lines possibly mapping water. Though many were lost to development, efforts to record and protect these sites highlight an inclusive Indigenous heritage art, reminding us that Los Angeles too rests on layers of sacred story and art.
